Why We’re Here
Vycarb builds technology that captures and permanently stores industrial CO₂ using water.
In 2021, our founder, Dr. Garrett Boudinot, was running a research program at Cornell on enhanced rock weathering, drawing on his background in climate science and chemical oceanography to develop new methods to capture and store CO₂. The chemistry behind that work is the same chemistry at the heart of Vycarb today: calcium and magnesium, in the presence of water, react with CO₂ and convert it to bicarbonate — a stable, dissolved ion that stays locked away from the atmosphere for tens of thousands of years.

One problem was measurement - these reactions, happening in open, heterogeneous natural environments, are extraordinarily difficult to quantify. Another problem was scale - bicarbonate in the ocean is a massive sink for carbon, and limiting it to just atmospheric or soil water fails to address CO₂ emitted from the source. So in 2022, Vycarb was founded to solve that problem directly: to accelerate, control, and measure this reaction so it could be deployed for immediate industrial decarbonization. From the start, our approach has been measurement-first, built on the age-old adage: you can't manage what you can't measure.
Since then, we've built that conviction into a suite of technologies — an aqueous chemical reactor that converts CO₂ to bicarbonate at industrial facilities, and a sensing system that, for the first time, measures the full reaction in real time. Our system looks very different today than it did in 2022, but it rests on the same foundation. We apply direct, real-time measurement and optimized chemical processing for carbon in water on industrial facilities to cut emissions from the sectors that are hardest to decarbonize: power, oil & gas, chemicals, biogas, cement, steel, and aluminum.
We've proven the technology works in the real world, and are now operating our third pilot in Brooklyn's East River. We're building a pipeline of projects across sectors and geographies where CO₂ can be permanently captured and stored using water. As we take this technology from proof of concept to commercial solution, we're growing scale, partnerships, and team to meet our ambition to be the largest carbon capture and storage solution in the world, decarbonizing CO₂-emitting facilities across scales, sectors, and geographies.
